How do Mogul’s ladders work?
So, you’re ready to compete in Mogul’s ladders, but you’re not quite sure how they work? You’re in the right place!
First thing’s first: the length of ladders can vary, and is entirely up to the organiser in question. Typically, a ladder might run for between 4 weeks and 3 months.
What remains the same during all Mogul ladders is that moving up and down it is the result of challenging teams, and defending against other challenges.
If the ladder is team based, you can sign up a team to a ladder even if you’re short on players - you simply won’t be eligible to start making challenges, or be challenged, until you’ve met the minimum number of required players in your tournament roster and they’ve all linked that game to their Mogul account.
Tell me more about this challenging stuff
Only team captains can challenge another team. Each ladder tournament will differ in how far above your current position an opponent can be challenged. By default challenges can be placed above you at a minimum of 4 positions or 20% of the total active participant count, whichever is greater. If the tournament has 100 participants, then you will be able to challenge up to 20 positions above you.
Upon challenging a team, you’ll need to select 3 separate days and times to play, and the team you’ve challenged will have 16 hours to respond - otherwise they receive a declined challenge penalty.
Challenged teams will receive a message via Mogul’s notification system and an email to inform them of this new match proposal. Be sure setup your inbox so that you’re always looped in on new challenges!
What about accepting a challenge and not showing up? When a team does this they receive a forfeit - having wasted everyone’s time - their penalty for that forfeit will be a 10 ladder position drop. A forfeit will also add to the team’s declined match count. So if this team forfeits a match, then declines another match they will incur a 20 ladder position drop. Ouch!!
Can I challenge an opponent to compete immediately?
Yes, if both you and your opponent’s Instant Challenge status is activated within the same ladder tournament, you are able to challenge and compete immediately!
To be eligible for instant challenges simply go to the ladder and you will see the option to toggle on or off your Instant Challenge state within your information bar at the top of any ladder. Click to activate it.
The yellow lightning bolt will be shown within the ladder on the left side of the challenge button if a participant has chosen to enable instant challenges.
When challenging an opponent to an instant challenge, you will want to start by selecting the team that you wish to challenge. Within the challenge screen, be sure to toggle on the instant challenge option. This will ensure that the challenge sent to your opponent is setup for instant play.
Can I request them to play instantly If their instant challenge is not activated?
Unfortunately no, only teams with the lightning symbol on can be challenged for instant challenge.
There is no penalty for declining or missing an instant challenge request.
What if I need to genuinely decline an incoming challenge?
That’s cool, we understand everyone has busy lives and sometimes your whole team can’t be rounded up, even with 3 days and times to choose from.
In this case, you’re given one free pass. If however, you decline a second challenge from another team the next time, you’ll be penalised 10 ladder positions for trying to dodge matches. It will be better to accept the challenge, even from a great team, and lose - this way you’re only moving down 1 ladder position.
A third consecutive declined challenge will set your team to an inactive state. As described below, this state moves you to the bottom of the ladder and prevents any further challenges from being received.
Got it. What else do I need to know?
There’s a bit more to our ladders than simply challenging and defending. Various states exist to help balance play and prevent people from gaming the system. A simple example is that if you cannot challenge the same player or team twice in a row.
‘States’, eh? Please, do go on…
There are 5 states you really need to know about. Only one state for any team can be active at a time. Each state determines whether or not a challenge can be made. Here’s a handy list for your reference:
(Challenging): a team has initiated a challenge. Because they need to wait up to 16 hours for a response from the other team, they cannot challenge any other teams at the same time, and cannot be challenged by other teams.
(Inactive): a team doesn’t have enough players, or have failed to accept 3 consecutive challenges. They've moved to the bottom of the ladder and cannot be challenged. However, they can recommence challenging other teams to start climbing the ladder again.
(Vulnerable): For 24 hours after losing an attack or rejecting a second challenge, this team can be challenged, but not challenge other teams. This also applies permanently to the team in #1 place - they are the hunted. Sounds pretty cool, we think...
Latest changes and update as of October 2019.
1. Remove states that prevent players challenging after a loss.
2. 16 hour challenge response.
3. Minimum challenge delay 1 hour.
4. Instant challenge enabled if online for solo tournaments.
5. Remove protected states from wins.
6. Prevention of consecutive same opponent challenges.
In ladder the only state you can be in now are Active, Pending Challenge, Inactive, Vulnerable (If first place). Everything else was eliminated.
